The inaugural ride of Parkinson’s Pedallers took place on Saturday morning the 6th of October 2012. Five of us took off on four bicycles (no it is not a typo); one was a tandem. The initiative for the ride came from Alan and Dianne James who established the website

The inaugural ride was from Birkdale along part of Moreton Bay to the all-important coffee stop at Wellington Point and return to Birkdale.

The return ride commenced with a short climb and from then on it was pretty flat, often with the breeze at our backs. It was a most enjoyable ride with good company.

I have been cycling on and off since I was just a little squirt and fairly regularly since I moved to Brisbane 10 years ago. I have continued cycling after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s four years ago. My experience is that there is a therapeutic effect possibly related to the rhythm of pedalling which certainly helps reduce the typical movement symptoms of Parkinson’s.

I am extremely grateful to Alan and Dianne for their initiative in establishing Parkinson’s Pedallers. I hope to see you on the next Par
kinson’s Pedallers ride.
